Thanks everyone. I think it depends on your scanner. My HP PSC Series is by no means heavy duty and it's just a desktop model and not a business one or anything, but HP often produces good stuff and this one is no exception.

Though no scanner seems to get good results on glossy photos anymore, such as my old Agfa did a decade ago and they all now seem to produce grainy cross-hatched pictures instead of near photo quality even this HP one , but mine does allow me the option to have 2 types of PDF output: image style and searchable text style.

The searchable text feature is awesome. In a no-images file, like typed pages, I get a result that looks likes the original typed pages.

And this is an available option, I don't need to do anything special or install anything special, it comes built into the document feature as one of the options. I've used it mostly only in the last 6 months, though, ever since I found the now common advice to scan periodicals and publications to PDF for which you have only an article or two out of there that you need. Then you can either recyle or donate the reading material after that.

This has worked very well and I've gotten rid of a lot of clutter in this manner. Those always came out okay. But from now on, I'll have searchable documents no matter what the input size, which is what matters. I have AA6. Reply to author.
